Feature Friday - Caroline Ross

Friends, for our first ever Feature Friday, I have the incredible pleasure of introducing you to the insanely talented Caroline Ross, of Caroline Ross Photography.  I first met Caroline when I was working for Henry's Cameras in Sudbury, many moons ago.  We learned rather quickly that we had a few friends in common, as well as, a love and passion for photography.  Since then, Ms. Ross has gone on to create an impressive business and portfolio for herself, working and living in various locations around the globe.  She is currently operating her wedding photography business in Vancouver, but still schedules a few dates in Ontario and abroad.  I can't say enough about her work though.  Every time she posts a new sneak peak, I'm in awe and genuinely inspired by the beauty she has captured.

So let me tell you a little bit about her.  She started her photography business seven years ago, beginning her journey at the age of twenty-two.  She originally began in Sudbury, On, which is where I met her, but has gone on to live and work in both Vancouver, BC and St Maarten in the Caribbean.  Her specialty is weddings, though don't be fooled, she can capture any style of photography with passion and grace.  From couples, to boudoir, to new babies and fashion models, Caroline Ross has a portfolio that can inspire and impress anyone.

I recently had the chance to ask Caroline a few questions about her business, including some of best and most memorable moments in her career. Take a look at what she had to say.

What style of photography do you enjoy most?

Wedding, Fashion and Travel

When/why did you decide to make photography your career?

In summer 2012 I left my full time job to pursue photography full time. It was a hard decision to leave a secure job but my partner was fully supportive and encouraged me to go after my dreams. Soon after I went full time, we moved to the Caribbean and I started shooting weddings in Canada and St Maarten.

What was your best/worst photography experience?

I have had some situations travelling alone in the Caribbean, particularly a harrowing cab drive from Kingston Airport to Montego bay. I always seem to get stopped and searched at the airports too, which is a bit annoying! My best photography experience was a road trip through Southern California - The variety of landscapes, cities and parks was amazing to experience and capture.

What is one of your long term goals? (business/photography related)

I would like to get a studio and start shooting more fashion and commercial

Have you been featured in an publications?

I have!  My favourite publication was a fashion shot on St Maarten that was featured in a South African fashion magazine, Tropics.

What excites you most about your business?

Each wedding and photo session I shoot, I try to improve from the last one. There is always a way to do things better and learn from your previous shoots.

What kind of gear do you use?

Canon 5d Mark III, Sony NEX7, Canon l-series lenses and canon 5d Mark II

If you could travel to any destination for your photography, where would it be and why?

I really want to go to Bali and South Asia, it looks so beautiful and its easy to eat vegan there!

How do you educate yourself to take better photos?

I’m always learning online and researching new lighting setups. I go to various workshops and conferences including WPPI and CPC.

What is your favourite image that you've ever catpured?

I really liked my brothers wedding images! He got married in my parents backyard 1.5 years ago and it was such an amazing wedding!
